The Meetings Will Look at Ways to Improve Oklahoma City Public Schools

Oklahoma City, OK - Responding to the retirement of Oklahoma City Public School Superintendent Karl Springer and several major events that have occurred over the past few months, OKCPS District 5 Board member Ruth Veales will hold two community meetings in her district. The community is invited to attend the two meetings held; Thursday, September 12th at 7pm in the Douglass High School Auditorium located at 900 N. Martin Luther King Blvd and Tuesday, September 17that 7pm in the Star Spencer High School Auditorium located at 3001 N. Spencer Road.

“I believe that we have been given a great opportunity to dramatically change and improve the education that children in OKCPS receive,” said Ruth Veales, OKCPS Board of Education District 5 Representative. “But this will only happen if we are willing to stand up and fight for it.”

The District 5 area includes Edwards Elementary, Green Pastures Elementary, Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, FD Moon Elementary, Thelma Parks Elementary, Shidler Elementary, Spencer Elementary, Telstar Elementary, Willow Brook Elementary, Wheeler Elementary, Rogers Middle School, Douglass Mid-High School, Northeast Academy of Health Sciences and Engineering, Star Spencer High School, and Extended Educational Services.

“I am frustrated at the lack of progress that has been made to improve the academic performance of the schools in my district. I have seen decisions made that have not helped my schools one bit,” said Veales.

“That is why these meetings are important. We know what must be done; now I need the community to join with me to make it happen.”

The goals of the two meetings are to inform the community about the challenges facing children in District 5, detail what can be done to improve the academic success of our children and to encourage the community to support the opportunities available to make a difference.

There will also be an opportunity for participants to provide input, concerns and ideas regarding the search for the next OKCPS district superintendent.
