Geoffrey Canada, child advocate, author and founder of Harlem Children's Zone will speak at the Petroleum Club, 4040 N. Lincoln Boulevard (located above the Jim Thorpe Museum) on the second floor, Wednesday, April 28th.He is being hosted by Black Liberated Arts Center (BLAC), Inc., Oklahoma City Public Schools and Mid-Del Schools in a forum that is from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. During that time, Canada will speak, answer questions, take photos, and sign copies of his books, "Fist Stick Knife Gun" and "Reaching Up to Manhood." Full Circle Bookstore will provide books for sale to those wishing to purchase them onsite.There will be no audio or video recording of Mr. Canada's presentation.Mr. Canada has a radically new idea: If you really want to change the lives of inner-city kids, change everything all at once-their schools, families, and neighborhoods. He has dedicated his life for the past 20 years to helping the most impoverished, at-risk youth beat the odds. He has transformed a 24 block area of Harlem and developed a network of services that has changed the lives of 10,000 youth.The 2010 Brock Prize Laureate was presented a $40,000 award for excellence in education by Oklahoma University President David Boren and Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis at Tulsa University. Canada has appeared on numerous television shows including 60 Minutes and The Colbert Report Anita Arnold said, "Oklahoma City is fortunate to have Mr. Canada come to share his experiences.
